Simple Pleasures

Bated breaths beget

the faintest smiles–

Caresses on the back

Coax featherlight illuminations

of rasping heat

Winding in the darkest places

of the Mind.

Illusory Ecstasy

Lies locked behind

the Pleasures of the Soul.

Such devious ruminations

on the Nature of Expectation.

My latest contribution to the wonderful One Shot Poetry Wednesdays! Once you’ve had a look, check out some of the other One Shot Poets, as well– they’re a skilled bunch of poets, looking to form a community and support one another.  Enjoy!

  1. thanks Chris for a wonderful piece that indeed was in itself a simply pleasure…by the way major kudos for a wonderful opening line…cheers and thanks for joining in again Pete

  2. Great alliteration in that opening. The remainder of the poem flows wonderfully well. Deep poem that covers many themes. Thanks

    • Indeed, there are many interpretations one can walk away with from this one, and I always enjoy the feeling of knowing that. Especially if people can find ways of interpretation I may have overlooked.

Thanks for commenting, and for stopping by–I’m glad you enjoyed it.

  3. the power for me resides in those last 3-4 lines…lies and expectations will both find you in trouble soon enough with their false promises….nicely played. thanks for linking up to oneshot!

    • We must always beware the lies we tell ourselves, lest we be consumed by them. A life lives in too much expectation can only lead to inevitable disappointment…

And being a part of One Shot is a real pleasure. Another batch of great works all around this week. Thanks for swinging by!

  4. Love the Nature of Expections…if we live there we will never be satisfied….bkm

    • So true. Too much expectation can only lead to our own inevitable dissatisfaction. Yet the question remains: to dream and never live, or to live, but never dream? Is either a life worth living? Ever, we need a balance…

  5. hmm those devious ruminations can evoke ecstasy and despair

Chris – you have stated it so well in this piece

Thanks for being here for One Shot Wednesday

  6. From the very first line to the very last line, it went beyond my expectations, it was grand.

    Nicely crafted, well done.

    came by one shot poetry

    • So true, so true. Life would be so much less without. But we must take care also not to be consumed by those expectations–lest life be left to disappointment, when desire and reality fail to match up.

      Thanks for stopping by!
